Poetry- "Jesus Year"

Jesus Year
by Jennifer Patino

It’s a new year
but the same old song
I’m tired from
dragging my burden of a
body around

I’m a boulder,
too heavy
A crashing wave,

The hours bleed into
each other
because the clouds didn’t
notice my “wet paint” sign

A forever downpour
but I claim it as mine

I never had much luck
with giving in
or letting go
I figured my struggles
were just mine to know
One more thing
I won’t let pass my lips
because the truth
just sounds like complaining
and no one wants to
listen to it

“I’m okay.
Go away.
It’s just a bad day,”
I scream to myself
in the mirror

“Happy Birthday,”
I respond

“Welcome to your
‘Jesus Year'”
