Poetry – "The Trouble With Arrogance" #NaPoWriMo Day 11

Day 11:

The Trouble With Arrogance
by Jennifer Patino

The trouble with arrogance
is that it’s so hard to avoid
Scream as loud as you want to,
but not at me,
or anyone
Keep insisting
you know me
by assuming,
guessing, digging into
my scalp
You will never be under this skin
You don’t fit in here
There’s no room for a maelstrom
in a stormy sea
I wasn’t aware of a thought process
so warped that every word
out of a woman’s mouth,
every drop of pain or
passionate pondering
falling from lips
or gnawed fingertips,
is yours to sexualize,
until you proved otherwise
The trouble with telling you this
is that I know you’ll recall
a twisted version of it to someone
and I can hear the conceit in their voice
as they nod and agree with you
I shout a warning
that no one hears
because it’s always
an overreaction
in an abusive person’s mind
I won’t fall victim
Not this time

  1. Nicely done. You can't change an arrogant person but you can change how you react.

By the way, are you familiar with the blog “imaginary garden with real toads”? They have an open share on Tuesdays and this would be cool to share (in my opinion).
