Poetry – "Fair Freedom"

Fair Freedom
by Jennifer Patino

“The real loneliness
is living among all these
kind people who only ask
one to pretend!” – Edith Wharton

Arrangements,
to the nines we are decked,
on display
Reputations
proceed, the prancing
young ponies,
unbridled,
their tails braided tight
Innocence,
an age we are coming to
At this age,
what are we coming to?
Considerations,
fashionable, respectable
independence, or are
rare pairings the better instance?
Unlabeled,
unlawful, scandalous affairs run wild
til they are reined in, tamed
Placements,
in pretty rows, unashamed
in peonies, lilies of the valley,
yellow rose petals at play

Author’s Note- Inspired by Edith Wharton’s “Age of Innocence”
