#OctPoWriMo – Day 1 – I Come From

babyhand

I come from embers in a too full ashtray,
a burning in the throat from too much
consumption of alcohol. I come from
bad timing, loss, and a salvaging of
something too desperately held on to.

I come from the stars, from a Creator
who knows what He’s doing even if I don’t
understand the plan. I come from
a woman with lost inhibition. I
come from a free-spirited man.

I come from the Earth. Her pain.
Her wonder. Her resiliency. I come from
a tribe of seers, of dreamers, of visionaries.
I come from stubborn warriors, tears,
annual powwows, and ceremony.

I come from abuse. I’m placed in a world
that won’t let up on me. Who seems dead set
on erasing me or killing me. I come from
no guarantees. I come from empty promises,
and broken treaties.

I come from a moment of no control.
I come from a union of broken souls.
I come into a space that is never
truly mine. I come from abandonment
and ingrained regret. I come from a last time.
