#OctPoWriMo – Day 12 – “Ghosts of Roses”

Ghosts of Roses // by Jennifer Patino

Think back
to the sickening scent
of sour roses

Yes,
too much of a good thing can be
intoxicating,

but too much beauty
can be toxic;
Lips of nightshade,

how I suffered
like the beatas
for you

Your elixir left lasting effects
wrapped up so tightly
inside your dark heart

We wore the same mask,
but yours was a spirit
of transference

Think back
to the crisp petals
laid upon my bedside table,

And the sniffling,
the struggle to inhale
without choking

on blooms and buds
now bruised
and lingering

somewhere
far, far away
from here
