#NaPoWriMo 2018 – Day 1: Craven

Craven mortals marvel
at miracles, yet are
threatened by that
which is perceived as abnormal

Standards are set, and
you’ll “live to regret”
breaking society’s mold;
We knowingly watch ourselves unfold

Like sheets, we are dingy,
old as our pasts’ ghosts
underneath a newly applied
mask, but we cannot hide

From walking, talking
mirrors, or the visions
of apparitions of our
respected masters as they appear

Are we afraid of what could
transform us?          Would
the mundane rejoice if
every speaking voice sounded the same?

Cower amongst thorns
and dying flowers,
watch the minutes of comfort pass,
count all of your precious, fragile hours

Fear consumes
Fear devours
